Abstract

Herbal drugs play a crucial function to protect organisms from the toxic effect of some compounds. The present study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of Teucrium Polium (TP) aqueous extract and vitamin C (Vit C) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl) which induced toxicity in rats. Male albino Wistar rats were divided into six groups: group I was used as controls, group II received CCl in olive oil (0.5ml/kg) by gavage, and group III received CCl in olive oil (0.5ml/kg) by gavage after three days of receiving TP (5g/l), orally, for seven days; Group IV received TP (5g/l) alone, orally, for seven days, Group V received CCl in olive oil (0.5ml/kg) by gavage after three days of receiving Vit C (250mg/kg) by intramuscular injection and Group VI received Vit C (250mg/kg) alone by intramuscular injection, for day seven. Some biochemical and hematological parameters were investigated. Our results showed that the administration of CCl caused hepatotoxicity as monitored by the significant increase in the levels of hepatic markers enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Alkaline phosphatase (PAL), total bilirubin (TB) and Gamma glutamyl transferase (γGT) levels) and a decrease in hematological parameters such as white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and blood platelet count (PLT). Treatment with TP or Vit C appeared to be effective against hematotoxic and the liver changes induced by CCl, as evidenced by the improvement of the parameters cited above. The CCl-treated group demonstrated a significant increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in erythrocytes thus causing a reduction in antioxidant defense system. Pretreatment with TP or Vit C improved the biochemical analyses, hematological parameters, and antioxidant defense system.

草药对保护生物体免受某些化合物的毒性作用起着至关重要的作用。本研究旨在评估香科科属植物水提取物(TP)和维生素C(Vit C)对四氯化碳(CCl)诱导的大鼠毒性的保护作用。雄性白化Wistar大鼠分为六组:第一组作为对照组,第二组经口灌胃给予橄榄油中的CCl(0.5ml/kg),第三组在口服给予TP(5g/l)7天后,经口灌胃给予橄榄油中的CCl(0.5ml/kg);第四组单独口服TP(5g/l)7天,第五组在肌肉注射给予Vit C(250mg/kg)3天后,经口灌胃给予橄榄油中的CCl(0.5ml/kg),第六组在第7天单独肌肉注射给予Vit C(250mg/kg)。研究了一些生化和血液学参数。我们的结果表明,给予CCl会导致肝毒性,表现为肝脏标志物酶(乳酸脱氢酶(LDH)、碱性磷酸酶(PAL)、总胆红素(TB)和γ-谷氨酰转移酶(γGT)水平)显著升高,以及血液学参数如白细胞(WBC)、红细胞计数(RBC)、平均红细胞血红蛋白浓度(MCHC)和血小板计数(PLT)降低。TP或Vit C治疗似乎对CCl诱导的血液毒性和肝脏变化有效,上述参数的改善证明了这一点。CCl处理组红细胞中丙二醛(MDA)水平显著升高,从而导致抗氧化防御系统降低。TP或Vit C预处理改善了生化分析、血液学参数和抗氧化防御系统。
