The purpose of this article is to review the emerging field of opportunistic CT, which can be used to screen patients for osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Although body composition measurements are not routinely obtained using CT, quantitative assessment of bone and muscle biomarkers on CT can add value to patient care. Automated bone and muscle measurements promise to transform the everyday practice of radiology without resulting in additional cost or radiation exposure for patients.
