Abstract

Exposure to particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM) alters cardiometabolic homeostasis. The reduced oxidative capacity in brown adipocytes and the development of inflammation and insulin resistance in white adipose tissue (WAT) can account for the dysmetabolic setting on PM exposure. In this forum article, we discuss relevant evidence to highlight a causal connection between PM-induced adipose tissue dysfunction and cardiometabolic disturbances.
