Abstract

Various medicinal plants find their use in cough treatment, based on traditions and long-term experience. Pharmacological principles of their action, however, are much less known. Herbal drugs usually contain a mixture of potentially active compounds, which can manifest diverse effects. Expectorant or antitussive effects, which can be accompanied by others, such as anti-inflammatory or antibacterial, are probably the most important in the treatment of coughs. The aim of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge of the effects of medicinal plants or their constituents on cough, based on reliable pharmacological studies. First, a comprehensive description of each effect is provided in order to explain the possible mechanism of action in detail. Next, the results related to individual plants and substances are summarized and critically discussed based on pharmacological and investigation.

各种药用植物因其传统和长期经验被用于咳嗽治疗。然而,其作用的药理学原理知之甚少。草药通常含有潜在活性化合物的混合物,可能具有多种作用。祛痰或镇咳作用(可能伴有其他作用,如抗炎或抗菌)可能是治疗咳嗽最重要的作用。本综述的目的是基于可靠的药理学研究,总结药用植物或其成分对咳嗽的作用的现有知识。首先,全面描述每种作用,以便详细解释可能的作用机制。接下来,根据药理学和调查结果,总结和批判性地讨论与个别植物和物质相关的结果。
